“Captain Kirk” San Pedro Cactus: A Rare Harvest from the Private Preserve
One 12″ Large Diameter Tip Cutting — Minimal Blemishes
Special sale! Our signature “Captain Kirk” San Pedro cactus cuttings are back in stock. For years, this specific variety of Trichocereus pachanoi has flourished exclusively on a privately owned botanical preserve. I am fortunate to hold the exclusive harvesting rights to this land—a sanctuary where these desert giants have been allowed to grow undisturbed for decades, reaching massive heights and impressive diameters.
I am typically called to the preserve only when nature takes its course—usually after high winds or heavy storms have toppled some of the older, heavier columns. Because these plants are only harvested following these natural events, our stock is inherently limited and highly sought after by serious collectors and landscaping enthusiasts.
The Art of the Manual Harvest
Many people ask why these cuttings are so special, and a big part of it is the “old school” way they are brought to market. Harvesting them is no easy task. As I get older, the physical demand of the job increases, especially since I work mostly solo to ensure the land is respected.
These large-diameter cacti are incredibly heavy due to their high water density. Once a column falls, I have to pack the cuttings out by hand. The terrain is rugged and inaccessible, making it impossible to bring in heavy machinery. I’ve spent many long days hauling these logs through the brush. I even try to get under the large logs when they fall to prevent them from hitting the ground too hard, which is a dangerous game! I’ve nearly been crushed more than once, and I’ve certainly picked up my share of scars. But when you see the quality of a 12-inch “Captain Kirk” tip, you realize the effort is worth it.
Why “Tip Cuttings” are the Collector’s Choice
In cactus propagation, Tip Cuttings are considered the “prime cuts.” They represent the most active growth point of the plant. While trunk cuttings are robust and excellent for “pupping” (growing new branches), a tip cutting allows you to maintain the aesthetic continuity of a beautiful, vertical column immediately upon rooting.
Tips are the most tender part of the plant, which is why they are so infrequent in our shop. Usually, when a giant column falls, the tip is the first thing to break or become heavily scarred. Finding a 12-inch tip with minimal blemishes is a rarity. While some may have minor, superficial scarring—a badge of honor from their life in a wild botanical sanctuary—these specific cuttings are selected for their exceptional health and structural integrity.
Growth and Care in Climate Zone 9
Our “Captain Kirk” variety is grown right here in Climate Zone 9, which perfectly mirrors the San Pedro’s native high-altitude Andean habitat. This environment is the secret behind the superior diameter and vitality of our T. pachanoi. When you purchase one of these cuttings, you aren’t just getting a plant; you’re getting decades of accumulated solar energy and botanical history.
Quick Care Tips for Your New Cutting:
-
Callousing: Your cutting will arrive with a dry, calloused base, ready for planting.
-
Soil: Use a fast-draining gritty mix (50% pumice or perlite).
-
Light: While they love the sun, acclimate your new tip slowly to avoid sunburn if you live in an extremely hot climate.
