Description

* (not related to the San Pedro cactus) A very beautiful and fast growing tall cactus for your garden. Tall and straight, it can be a great focal point in your landscape

* Low moisture requirements! Because it is subtropical, it may need a little more than some cacti and doesn’t like temps below 40 degrees F.

* Easy to grow and care for! With its requirements met, it will require little else from you to grow into a majestic specimen

The Mexican Fence Post is a beautiful cactus that grows upright in columns. The tall stems grow usually with 5 or 6 pronounced ridges and up to 15 ft tall and six inches thick under ideal conditions. They will branch out from the cactus base to form a fence-like cluster of tall, cylindrical “posts” that can reach four feet in width. Along these ridges run symmetrical rows of small white thorns that make the Mexican Fence Post look striped from a distance. Spines are easy to navigate and handle with gloves.

The Mexican Fence Post also produces a wonderful pink to light-red flower that adds great seasonal color to your landscape.

Propagation of these columnar cacti is easily done by placing the cut ends directly into the soil. Plant the Mexican fence post in well-draining soil and full sun with reflected heat or partial shade. It is drought-resistant, but likes occasional water during the hot, dry months. Let the soil completely dry out between irrigations. It is hardy to about twenty-five degrees Fahrenheit. Protect the tips of the plant when temperatures dip below the low twenties, by placing Styrofoam cups on the tips of the cactus.

As long as heat, sun and soil moisture are in the right balance, this cactus needs little care. It is used for perimeter and home fencing in the Southwest and Mexico when planted close together.
